Can’t stop overanalyzing and ruminating about the same thoughts? You’ve got to try these three easy tips to help you cope.

Number one, give yourself a time limit. Actually set your phone for one to five minutes. Let yourself think all you want about everything, and then when the timer goes off, literally yell “STOP!” And stop.

That’s when you move on to number two, which is distract yourself. Do whatever works for you. Maybe it’s Wordle, maybe it’s an actual crossword puzzle. Maybe it’s my personal fave: Candy Crush. Maybe it’s taking a shower or cleaning your closet while listening to your favorite music.

And that brings us to number three. Know your triggers. Knowing the types of things that are going to set you off and send you into a spiral and have you ruminating all day. That is the first step to being able to cope with them. Write them down when they happen, watch for a pattern, and work with a therapist to figure out your best ways to cope.
