What do you do if you’re a hot sleeper, but you also want the benefits of a weighted blanket?

This is a great question. You want to look for a weighted blanket that’s made with lyocell, or its brand name Tencel, which is an ingredient that can keep you cool. Lyocell is made from the pulp of wood, hydrophilic. If a fabric is hydrophilic, that means it will absorb water. It can absorb sweat during the night, so it will take on sweat instead of leaving you laying there in your own pile of perspiration.

Another good thing to look for in a weighted blanket that’s not going to make you hot is a thick weave. Some of these weighted blankets can be very heavy, and you want to have one that’s at least 10 percent of your body weight to get the anxiety-reducing benefits, but that can make you sweaty.

This is why a lot of people really love Bearaby. It’s a loose weave product. It looks more like a throw than a traditional weighted blanket, so it also looks cool. They have one that is specifically made for people who sleep hot and it does contain Tencel. It’s called the Bearaby Tree Napper (nordstrom.com, $279) . It’s an open loop weave so that air can flow through the fibers themselves as well as the fact that it has this Tencel material that can be cooling and moisture-wicking, meaning it will pull the moisture away from your body.

Another great brand for a cooling weighted blanket is Luxome (luxome.com, $155). They also use lyocell in their bedding and it really is effective at keeping you cooler during the night.

Now, if you’re a super hot sleeper and you just can’t take it, consider trying a weighted stuff animal. There’s a great brand called Hugimals (hugimals.com, $64). You can lay it on your body. It was actually created by a person who has anxiety, but was too hot from weighted blankets, so she created this essentially as a therapy dupe and an alternative to a weighted blanket.

It’s weighted in the body, it’s weighted in the arms and the legs, so you get the benefits of deep touch pressure, but you don’t get the weight of a weighted blanket.
